Ms. Smith has worked in the insurance industry for more than twenty-five years in a variety of management and claims handling positions. Her career has included work as a multi-line property casualty claims representative where she handled all types of general liability, automobile, property and construction defect claims. She was promoted through the claims ranks to team leader and ultimately served as Claims General Counsel where she has represented insurers in direct actions, bad faith defense and declaratory relief matters as well as arbitrations, mediations, and settlement conferences. She has presented and participated in numerous legal training seminars on all aspects of claims handling, case law trends and other insurance related topics. She has provided technical support for CIGNA's underwriting division in assessing risk of new accounts. She was responsible for management of legal expenditures using bill review and onsite audits and has represented insurers in fee disputes and Cumis arbitrations as well as negotiation of hourly and alternative billing arrangements.
