Dr. Greenfield is one of the world's leading experts in the areas of Internet Addiction and Compulsive Internet use. He has functioned as a general expert and defense witness to legal counsel in these areas. He has been involved in over 25 cases thus far and has written, researched, and lectured internationally on this area for the last 12 years, including one of the
earliest books on the topic, entitled "Virtual Addiction" and has authored numerous professional articles, papers, and book chapters.
Dr. Greenfield is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on Internet addiction and Internet Behavior and serves as an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine. When serving as legal consultant, his work typically involves five (5) areas of Internet and Computer Behavior:
1) Viewing, downloading and forwarding/distributing child-pornographic images.
2) Cases resulting in the arrest of individuals for allegedly intending to, or attempting to, meet minor children for sexual purposes.
3) Cases where Internet use or abuse is part of a divorce proceeding.
4) Cases where individuals are terminated for Internet abuse in the workplace.
5) Problems in the workplace due to violation of Internet and computer use policies.
He personally evaluates and/or treats patients for compulsive Internet use, especially around sexual or pornographic issues. He may review case files and documents and offer his expert opinion relating to computer or Internet behavior/addiction for purposes of assisting in constructing a defense. He frequently consults with patients and counsel on background research and issues relating to computer, Internet, and digital media technology abuse and addiction. He has been helpful in numerous cases in helping achieve a reduction or elimination of sentences (both in treatment cases and also as an expert) as well as ameliorating the stressful effects of the legal process for patients. He has also been helpful in the treatment of a variety of these conditions, as he works primarily as a practicing psychologist with a specialty in general addictions and sex addiction treatment. Dr. Greenfield's greatest strength as a witness is that he is primarily practicing clinician treating patients, but is also an expert on these issues and can speak to them both theoretically and from a practical perspective.
