Profile:
Forensic Psychology Expert whose specialties include criminal behavior, custody evaluations and civil litigation. Dr. Heller is a practicing licensed Psychologist with Court experience and has been qualified by Federal, New York and New Jersey Courts. Dr. Heller is a forensic mental health clinician for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), assigned to East Jersey State Prison located in Rahway, NJ. His duties include forensic evaluations, including suicide assessments, sex offender specific assessments, related evaluations to assess risk of dangerous behavior toward self and/or others, pre-release evaluations, suitability for work detail and administrative segregation evaluations, crisis intervention, training of corrections officers in suicide prevention, individual and group psychotherapy. Dr. Heller specializes in the review and analysis of potentially mitigating circumstances in connection with criminal behavior, criminal responsibility and competency to stand trial. Recent assignments include "death row" evaluations for the Federal Public Defender (Arizona), and evaluation of a defendant accused of a triple homicide (Pennsylvania). Dr. Heller is also the current consultant to the Rockland County (New York) Forensic mental health unit, where he has served since 2006. He provides court ordered forensic evaluations involving custody, visitation, competency, criminal responsibility, child abuse/child sexual abuse/neglect, domestic violence and juvenile delinquency. Additionally he is a consultant to the Bergen Family Center, where he performs child custody evaluations and the Rutgers Urban Legal Clinic for Risk Assessment/pre-parole evaluations. Dr. Heller is the former Director of Mental Health and Alcoholism Services for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. He is well known and respected among his colleagues as a clinician and as a forensic expert.
