Dr. Brown focuses on the human use and economic functionality of built environments. He has consulted and testified for defense and plaintiffs on human and premises factors affecting pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists: parking lots, bicycles, doorways, stairs and steps, walkways, driveways, maintenance, signage and other conditions in commercial (retail, office, food service, multi-family) industrial, public space, health care, and public assembly facilities.

He uses an award-winning spatial network approach that identifies, quantifies and compares underlying spatial and visual patterns affecting physical and cognitive capabilities of pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists that has been successfully reviewed for Daubert compliance and contributes to the reliability of accident reconstruction. This methodology has been productively applied in related domains - problem property, eminent domain access takings, architectural copyright (largest US damages award) and public space - First Amendment public forum.

He has published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed scientific and scholarly journals, professional and critical publications, newspaper columns and made presentations and delivered keynote talks to local, national and international audiences. His recent book is Access, Property and American Urban Space published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis. Dr. Brown is a member of the land economics honorary, Lambda Alpha International and a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
